It may have been a couple of months since The White Keys recorded with us but we still can’t get their infectious disco soul out of our heads. The 9 piece function band took just 3 days to record live, mix and master a catalogue of stunning cover songs that have been carefully arranged into 10 minute medleys. From Justin Timberlake to Nelly and Kylie Minogue,The White Keys ran through the songs as only extremely well rehearsed pros can; with seemingly effortless precision.
Day one was spent focusing on the core rhythm section of the band – drums, bass, keys and guitar, setting everyone up between Studio A‘s live booth and the wonderful large live room Studio 1 to get plenty of acoustic separation allowing for a more controlled mix. The 2nd day focused on additional instruments – brass, vocals and minor overdubs, with a third day to mix and master. Engineer John Martin’s job was made easy though by the band’s excellent preparation. Knowing the songs inside out and with excellent equipment and instruments that are perfectly set up allowed John to concentrate on getting a fantastic sound with the right microphone choice and placement. This level of preparation up front meant that relatively speaking, there was very little that was needed in the editing and mixing stage of the process. What you can hear is how these guys will sound live. Currently in Malasia for a month, The White Keys have a full diary that sees them travelling all over the world, not just the UK.
